Ride style: Social
Terrain: Mainly Flat
Estimated Distance: 65 kms+
Start Point: Maylands, Narrows - North Side
Start Time: Maylands 8:00, Narrows 8:30
We're planning the old familiar "Friendly Freo" with the usual obligatory coffee stop (in Fremantle). We'll have the usual Maylands Railway Station start at 8:00 am then hook up at the Narrows. The ride will start from the Narrows Bridge (North Side - where the bike path goes under the freeway bridge) at 8:30 am (don't forget to let me know if you're joining the ride)

Here's what was meant to happen on Saturday morning:
ReplyDeleteHead out with the Rouleurs at 7 o'clock for a brisk but enjoyable group ride.
Cruise down to Freo and catch up with Ride-Group.
Coffee, muffin, etc
Pleasant ride home.
This was intended to be a convenient way to add some extra miles to my Saturday morning without having to slog away for miles in solitude.
...and here's what actually happened:
Rouleurs set off at 7:10am. Main Group #2 somehow manages to get mixed up with Main Group #1, and the pace is a cracker from the start.
Racing speed along Benara Road and back along Alexander drive, Vincent Street, etc.
At one point on Alexander Dve, the group gets split by traffic lights. I'm in the front group and we are "waiting" for the others to get back on. Gradually, the pace creeps up and soon we're zooming along again. I ask the young lady beside me "Is this how we ride when we're waiting for the others to rejoin?" She replies, with irony, between gasps "Well, we're only doing 37km/h - they should get back on any second now."
As we come down Thomas Street, I am totally shredded. Correction - I am shredded, chopped and toasted.
The group goes by UWA and I peel off. I check my watch and find that it is 8:25.
Rather than head to Freo, I roll back to the corner where I met the group as they come by.
Part of my brain is still in Rouleur-mode, but my legs have decided that they've had enough.
By the time I get to Claremont, something in a far corner of my brain (the little-used "common sense" function) tells me there is nothing but pain ahead and that I should call it a day.
So I wobble home and devote the rest of the day to calorific intake.
Legs were still feeling the effects the next day.
Plan for the near future - less of the big chainring, more cake and coffee.
Cheers
Paul
